Supporting Those Who Care: Why Carers Week Matters More Than Ever
At Personal Care Specialists, we see every day the difference a caring person can make. Behind many of the people we support across Leeds and Yorkshire is someone else working quietly in the background; a husband, daughter, neighbour or friend doing their very best to help a loved one.
That’s why Carers Week (8–14 June 2026) is so important.
What is Carers Week?
Carers Week is a UK-wide campaign that shines a light on the vital role of unpaid carers. It aims to raise awareness, recognise their contributions, and support those who may not even realise they are carers.
Across the UK, there are around 5.8 million unpaid carers, many balancing work, family life, and their own wellbeing alongside caring responsibilities.

This Year’s Theme: Building Carer Friendly Communities
The theme for 2026 is “Building Carer Friendly Communities”. This is about creating places where carers feel:
- Recognised and valued
- Supported and understood
- Able to access help when they need it
That message really matters. Caring can often feel isolating, especially when people don’t identify themselves as a “carer”, but simply as a son, partner or friend doing what feels natural.
Who Is a Carer?
You don’t need a job title to be a carer. A carer is anyone who provides unpaid support to someone who:
- Is older or frail
- Has a disability
- Lives with illness or mental health conditions
- Needs extra help day-to-day
Many people never formally identify as carers, which means they may miss out on support that could make a real difference.
The Challenges Carers Face
Through our work in home care, we regularly meet families who are doing everything they can, often at a cost to their own health and wellbeing. Common challenges include:
- Feeling overwhelmed or exhausted
- Struggling to balance care with work or family life
- Not knowing where to turn for advice
- Worrying about leaving their loved one alone
Carers give so much, but too often they feel they have to manage on their own.
How Home Care Can Help
This is where professional home care can play a supportive role — not to replace carers, but to stand alongside them.
At Personal Care Specialists, we work with families across Leeds to:
- Provide regular visits to ease the pressure
- Offer respite or short-term care, giving carers time to rest
- Support with personal care, medication, and daily routines
- Help loved ones stay safe and independent at home
Even a small amount of support each week can make a big difference to a carer’s wellbeing and peace of mind.
Our Message This Carers Week
This week is a chance for all of us, as individuals, communities, and organisations to do more to recognise carers. We encourage you to:
- Simply say “thank you” – it goes a long way
- Check in on someone you know who is caring
- Ask if they need a break or extra support
- Share information about services that could help
